NeoCons PRESENTE EN TODO EL MUNDO / NeoCons PRESENT THROUGHOUT THE WORLD
After two years of continual growth, the number of subscribers to NeoCons seems to have stabilized. At present, we have 945 subscribers in 55 countries: 57% are based in Austral and Neotropical America (ANA), 34% live in Canada and the United States, and the remaining 9% inhabit Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and the island nations of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. A somewhat unexpected characteristic of NeoCons subscribers is that only a small minority, around 10%, are members of SCB. We invite the other 90% of readers of NeoCons to consider joining us: the cost of membership only (with no journal access) is just US$ 10 per year, while the rate for full membership in developing countries, which includes electronic access to the journal Conservation Biology, is just US$ 25. Compared with many other scientific societies, this is a bargain. The principal mission of NeoCons is to strengthen the discipline of conservation biology in ANA. We achieve this only through support from the SCB. Your membership will help ensure a solid and well organized scientific community in the region, and continued support for NeoCons.

1. Scholarships available / Becas disponibles: KLEINHANS FELLOWSHIP, RAINFOREST ALLIANCE, RESEARCH IN TROPICAL NON-TIMBER FOREST PRODUCTS (English only / Sólo inglés)
Applications due by January 10, 2003
The Kleinhans Fellowship supports research to better understand and improve the impacts of non-timber forest product (NTFP) harvest and marketing on rural livelihoods and tropical forest ecosystems. A successful application will outline the need for research, its potential applications and its likely impact on local communities and forest ecosystems.
Examples of potential research topics include: a) the development of new markets for NTFPs, and/or the expansion of existing markets; b) the development of Best Management Practices for commercial NTFPs; c) the impacts of NTFP harvests and/or their commercialization on rural livelihoods, biodiversity or land tenure; d) means of integrating NTFP harvests and timber forest management.
The Fellow will be expected to submit quarterly progress reports throughout the duration of the fellowship, and a paper suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal when the fellowship is completed. Fellows are also expected to summarize and disseminate project results in the local language to communities in and around the study area.
GEOGRAPHIC FOCUS: The Kleinhans Fellowship research area is restricted to Latin America. Applications for projects conducted in the Peten region of Guatemala or Southern Mexico are especially encouraged.
ELIGIBILITY: Applications for any tropical forest type are eligible. The successful applicant will have a master's degree in forestry, ecology, botany, environmental science or an appropriate related field. Doctoral candidates or post-doctoral researchers are preferred. Applicants may substitute relevant experience for degrees.
AWARD AMOUNT: The fellowship provides a grant of $15,000 (US) per year, for two years. Please note that the Fellowship will not subsidize academic tuition and fees, nor will it cover costs of purchasing transport vehicles, or unnecessary or unreasonable equipment.
SELECTION: Each application will be judged on the merits of the proposal, the feasibility of the plan and the qualifications of the candidate. Judging is conducted by a panel of forestry and botany experts and tropical conservationists. The following are some of questions the committee will consider: a) Can the research be carried out as proposed? b) Does the investigator appear to have the necessary skills and experience to bring the research to a fruitful conclusion? c) Is the proposal practical and is it for a project that can eventually have commercial potential? d) Will the research help provide a livelihood for communities in and around tropical forests without causing destruction of the forests? e) If the research is site-specific, can the methodology be adapted and applied by people in other countries? f) Is the project new and entrepreneurial? g) Will the research be useful to someone with no business experience and with little or no venture capital?
APPLICATION FORMAT: There is no official application form. Completed applications must include the following (in English): a) A proposal that cannot exceed seven typed pages in length. Proposal should include an abstract, a review of the relevant literature, detailed methodology, and a discussion of the project's practical applications; b) A budget; c) A copy of the candidate's curriculum vitae or resume; d) Two letters of recommendation; e) A list of past, current and potential funding sources for both the applicant and the project.
Applicants are required to submit their completed application in digital (electronic) form by email to Deanna Newsom at dnewsom@ra.org or by regular mail to:

2. Scholarships available / Becas disponibles: FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONSERVATION PROFESSIONALS FROM THE LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN ON CONSERVATION AND STEWARDSHIP (English only / Sólo inglés)
Application Deadline: 5 March 2003
Next summer the Atlantic Center for the Environment will conduct a four-week fellowship program on land conservation and stewardship for conservation professionals from countries in the Caribbean and Latin America. Up to eight positions will be available. This intensive program will be practical and problem-solving in its approach, introducing participants to conservation issues in the northeastern United States and eastern Canada, and enabling them to begin a dialogue with their North American counterparts. Its broad goals are to provide training and professional development for conservation leaders from the Caribbean and Latin America, promote an exchange of ideas and innovations in the area of landscape conservation and stewardship, and strengthen the capacity of NGOs in both regions to conserve natural areas through stewardship. Through round-table discussions, site visits and internships, participants will have the opportunity to share ideas with their counterparts, acquire new information and develop their practical skills.
DATES: 12 July - 9 August 2003 (specific dates to be confirmed)
FELLOWSHIP ACTIVITIES: The fellowship program will begin at the Atlantic Center's headquarters in Ipswich, Massachusetts and will involve travel in the northeastern United States (including Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont) and eastern Canada.
PROGRAM THEME: The program theme of stewardship takes an overall landscape view, addressing conservation needs on land which cannot be separated from human existence and commerce, and encouraging personal responsibility for sound natural resource management. The fellowship will focus on landscape conservation and the related fields of biodiversity conservation, rural economic development, and sustainable agriculture and forestry. There will be a special emphasis this year on coast and marine conservation.
PROGRAM DETAILS: This is a group fellowship program. Applicants should be advised that the program includes intensive periods of travel as part of a group. Accommodations will be small inns (double-occupancy) and homestays. We will work with selected applicants to meet the costs of tuition, food, lodging and ground transportation (approximately US$5,000/person) through new and existing sponsorships.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The fellowship program will be open to individuals working as leaders, staff or volunteers with a Latin American or Caribbean institution (NGO or relevant government agency) active in the areas of biodiversity conservation, marine/coastal protected areas, landscape conservation, or rural community development. Applicants should be able to work well in a group and participate actively in discussions. Since all discussions will be in English and it is not feasible to provide interpreters, proficiency in English is required. Other criteria include: project experience in one of the aforementioned areas; leadership potential as demonstrated by past work as a manager, citizen activist, organizer and/or educator; and ability to make use of and share the fellowship experience in one's work at home.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Interested applicants should send the following
materials:
1. A letter of application (no more than four pages), in English, answering the following questions: a) Describe your experience in environmental protection, generally, and in conservation and stewardship in particular. Describe any relevant projects that you are working on or planning. b) What are your long-term goals for promoting conservation and stewardship in your community, region or country? c) What are the specific needs of your NGO to help strengthen its function and activities in this area? d) How would this fellowship experience benefit your work and that of your organization? How would you disseminate the knowledge gained to other NGOs? e) In what ways could you imagine playing a long-term role in an NGO stewardship project at the local, national and/or international levels?
2. A resume (curriculum vitae)
3. A brief description of the organization with which you work and its activities
4. Two letters of reference (one should be from the leader of an NGO other than your own) describing the applicant's qualifications, activities within the environmental movement, and the potential impact of the fellowship opportunity on his or her work. (English is not required.)
Applications should be sent to Brent Mitchell, Director of Stewardship, QLF/Atlantic Center for the Environment, 55 South Main Street, Ipswich, MA 01938, USA; brentmitchell@qlf.org. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The letter of application, resume, and organizational description should be in English. Application materials cannot be returned. Email applications will be accepted, but must be accompanied by signed letters of reference. Decisions will be announced in May 2003. For more information, see: http://www.qlf.org
